June 2017-- Although open for a mere six months, the Westerly Education Center has already received two awards for its transformative work in the Westerly region.
On June 5, the R.I. Governor's Workforce Board presented the The Workforce System Innovation Award to Westerly Education Center and recognized, in particular, the Royce Family Fund for their financial contribution, leadership and commitment to enhancing the state's workforce efforts by developing the new training and education center in Westerly. On June 6, Grow Smart RI honored Westerly Education Center for strengthening Rhode Island through innovative revitalization and preservation initiatives and partnerships. The 2017 Smart Growth Award highlighted the Westerly Education Center's role in transforming a 2.5-acre brownfield site into "a vibrant downtown hub for job training." More than 250 business, civic, and community stakeholders attended the award ceremony at the Stadium Theater Performing Arts Center in Woonsocket.
